How Ireland is Attracting Tech Talent Dublin punches above its weight in attracting global tech giants. Microsoft, Intel, Symantec and Oracle are all well-established for years. More recently Internet giants including Twitter, Facebook and  Google have made the city their  European HQ. This cluster effect creates economic and social benefits that are well-documented. But for the growth to continue one key ingredient is essential: people, lots of them. Ireland is known as a country that traditionally exports its talent. It’s one of the only countries in the world with a smaller population than it had 200 years ago. There are over 800,000 Irish born people living outside the country. More people in the UK claim Irish heritage than there are people in Ireland! Thankfully the trend reversed, dramatically, in the past decade. Between 2002 and 2011 the non-national population grew from 5.8% of the population to 12%. Many of them are working in the IT sector where demand for the right tech, sales, marketing, operations and multi-lingual skills is at a premium. In Ireland, as elsewhere, there is a lot of talk about what should be done to build a pipeline of talent into the country. It is, after all, the raw material that drives the innovation sector.  It’s beyond the scope of any individual employer to shoulder the responsibility of branding their city or country as an attractive destination for professionals. But it’s a collective good for all employers if it is done. I met with a group of proactive recruiters from the biggest tech employers in Dublin who were discussing this issue and trying to figure out a way to tackle it. Everybody saw the benefits of co-operation. We put together a proof of concept plan, funded entirely by the companies, to see if we could make an impact. Make IT in Ireland was launched last week. The plan is to make people around Europe aware of the opportunities that exist in Ireland and promote the benefits of living here. What a great job! MakeITinIreland.com contains one simple message: Ireland is home to the world’s best technology companies. We’re looking for the best people! It contains useful information about moving to Ireland and has links to the careers site of the sponsor companies. A decision was made not to include job posts. This was for two reasons: one we didn’t want it to appear like a jobs board, and secondly it removed any additional administrative workload for the companies. Instead, candidates are directed to the career sites of the companies where they can apply for roles directly. Reports on this activity are one of the key performance indicators of interest to the companies. Another benefit to the companies, and candidates, is that people can submit  their CV into a CV database. All of the companies can then login and review the CVs. When candidates apply they’re encouraged to categorise their skills into back end developer, front end developer, sales/marketing, content creation, customer service/support or other. Companies than then review by category or do keyword searches based on the text of the CVs which is indexed. A great website, however, is like the proverbial lighthouse in a bog: brilliant but useless. We have to reach a widely dispersed European demographic that’s bombarded with marketing messages. Thankfully, some of the companies involved are social media players including Twitter, Facebook and Google. This helps. Almost all of the people in demand for careers in the tech sector are heavy users of social media. It’s the obvious way for us to reach them. We’ll also experiment with paid search on Google and Bing, and potentially other channels. Changing jobs and moving to another country isn’t typically an impulse move. What we’re doing will take time. If successful it should make the recruiters  jobs a little easier and play a part in building a sustainable pipeline of talent into the country. Tian Tan Buddha in Hong Kong When searching for a unique experience to enjoy in Hong Kong, a visit to the Tian Tan Buddha is a great option. Located on Lantau Island and known locally as the Big Buddha, this impressive bronze statue was completed in 1993 and brought attention to the Po Lin Monastery where it is housed. The formerly remote location, surrounded by lush mountain scenery, is one of the most important Buddhist sanctuaries in Hong Kong and has dubbed by some as the “Buddhist World in the South”. The Tian Tan Buddha is the main feature of the Monastery these days, and it symbolizes harmony between man, nature and religion. With a height of 34 metres, and featuring a massive 268 steps, the Buddha took 12 years to complete. It was named after Tian Tan, the Temple of Heaven in Beijing, and presents the Buddha figure in a posture of serenity. His left hand rests on his knee to represent happiness, while his right hand is raised in blessing. The Tian Tan statue sits on a lotus throne on top of a three-tiered altar and it faces north to look over the lands and the Chinese people. Visitors can climb the steps to take a closer look at the Buddha as well as enjoy stunning mountain and sea views. Leshan Giant Buddha in China Head to western China to take in the sight of the Giant Buddha of Leshan, a massive statue carved out of a cliff face in Sichuan. Representing the figure of Maitreya â€" a Bodhisattva traditionally represented as a stout figure in a seated pose â€" the Buddha was first started in the year 713 (during the Tang Dynasty) and worked on by thousands of sculptors and labourers before being finished in the year 803. Said to be the largest carved stone Buddha on Earth, the Leshan stands at over 70 metres tall and features exquisite detail, including over 1,000 sculpted, embedded buns in its coiled hair. The Buddha statue has historical and architectural significance and is a UNESCO World Heritage-listed site. Wat Mahathat Buddha Head in Thailand The city of Ayutthaya in Thailand is home to one of the more unusual Buddhist statures around the globe. Set within the ruins of Wat Mahathat (The Temple of the Great Relic) is a Buddha head, the only remains of a sandstone statue whose body has been lost to time. The head peers out from the climbing roots and vines of an ancient tree and has been delighting visitors to the region for years. Around the Buddha head also lays other statues of the Ayutthaya period that have survived much destruction in the area over the past 600 years. This historical site is a popular tourist destination and an easy day trip from Bangkok. Gal Vihara in Sri Lanka A breathtaking representation of the Buddha â€" known as the Gal Vihara â€" sits in the northern monastery of Parakramabahu in Polonnaruwa, Sri Lanka. A massive rock temple that showcases the high point of Sinhalese rock carving, the Gal Vihara was constructed by Parakramabahu the Great in the 12th century and features four separate Buddha images, all of which are cut from one huge slab of granite. One of the large stone figures is a reclining statue of the Buddha that measure 14 metres in length; while a large standing depiction is a tall seven metres in height. Ushiku Daibutsu in Japan Another one of the world’s tallest statues is located in the city of Ushiku in Japan, only about an hour away from Tokyo. Standing at 120 metres high, including a 10-metre base and 10-metre lotus platform, is the Ushiku Daibutsu, a huge bronze Buddha statue that was completed in 1995. Travellers wanting a lovely view can enter the base of the figure (which depicts the Amitabha Buddha) and take an elevator to an observation platform that is 85 metres off the ground.

Book review The fifth discipline fieldbook - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog The fifth discipline by Peter Senge is probably the most influential book on learning organizations. It laid the theoretical groundwork for creating learning organizations by defining five essential skills: Systems thinking, personal mastery, mental models, shared vision and team learning. The Fifth discipline fieldbook follows up on the theory, and offers a wealth of methods and tools to strenghten the practice of the disciplines. It also contains lots of case stories from many different companies. The book is excellent. The practical element added to the original theory gives the subject a new depth. The case stories especially are a joy to read. The books only drawback is that its old published in 1994. Id like to know whats been happening in the meantime. The main thing that I learned from the fieldbook, is the time factor. Repeatedly it is stressed, that trying to change a medium-sized or large organization takes years. Two of the case stories mention periods of four to six years to define and introduce cultural changes or a shared vision. This is a bit different than sending top-level management of on a three day retreat, have them return with a Vision, and then spending a month or two selling the vision in the organization.
